The Morris Minor was designed under the leadership of Alexander Issigonis and made its debut at the Earls Court Motor Show in London in October 1948 and more than 1. 6 million were manufactured in three series: the Series MM -1948 to 1953, the Series II -1952 to 1956, and the Series III (1000) -1956 to 1971.
Initially available as a two-door saloon and convertible, the range was expanded to include a four-door saloon from September 1950, an estate car with a wooden frame (the Traveller) from October 1953 and panel van and pick-up truck variants from May 1953. It was the first British car to sell over a million units and is considered a classic example of automotive design as well as being "quintessentially English".
By the time this Series III car hit the roads, the Minor used the 948cc A series engine which significantly improved the Minor?s performance and the four-speed gearbox boasted taller ratios which transferred the Engine's 37bhp to the rear wheels and the 0-60mph time was slashed from close to a minute to around 30 seconds and the top speed increased from 63 to 75mph.
This lovely Series III 2-Door example rolled off the Cowley production lines in the summer of 1957 and was registered to its first owner - a Mr Jan Krauz of Great Haywood, Stafford on 17th September 1957 with its current and only numberplate 687 SRF. It is finished in its original colour scheme of Ivory White with a Red Vinyl interior and Red carpets, 948cc Engine, 4 Speed Manual Gearbox and sitting on its original 14" Steel wheels painted in off-white with Chrome hub caps.
The original owner retained the car for 28 years until it was sold to the second owner, also from Great Haywood in Stafford in July 1985. He kept the car until 2016 ? a full 31 years and according to the MOT history and DVLA tax records, it appears as though the car was off the road from April 2005 until 2016 when he sold the car, as the next MOT certificate was in July 2017 and it records the mileage as being 32, 976 miles. The oldest MOT in the file is from December 1990 when the mileage was 30, 977, so it had only covered 2, 000 miles in 11 years and the speedometer now reads 33, 164, but we are not able to confirm this as its original mileage from new without any early history on the car.
The car was sold to the 3rd owner - also in Stafford in 2016 and he owned the car for 6 years before selling it to the current and 4th registered keeper in Stoke on Trent in July 2022. In October last year, the car was taken to Elms Motors in Hilderstone, Staffordshire and they fitted an Exchange Gearbox and new Clutch kit and carried out an oil & filter service on the car and their invoice for these works came to £1, 370. 74 and we understand that the car has only covered circa 100 miles since then.
Due to the lack of an early history, we are not able to confirm exactly what works have been carried out on the car, but we think it has been repainted at some point its life + there is evidence of repairs to floors and sills, but we can say that the car is in really nice condition throughout with no rust to speak off and the interior is very much original and has a lovely patina.
The car comes with its MOT history from 1990 + a few invoices, full ownership history from new, an early Haynes Workshop Manual, a spare wheel with an unused tyre, jack & wheel-brace and a document from Reg Transfers giving its original cherished number plate 685 SRF a valuation of £2, 500 on its own!
This Morris Minor is classified as an Historic Vehicle and as such the car is Road Tax free, MOT exempt and ULEZ charge free! It is of course also eligible for cheap Classic Car Insurance, so please see our Links page - details above for details of Classic Insurance brokers.
Like many cars of this era however, the Morris Minor is becoming an increasingly rare sight on our roads today, but with its combination of simplicity, character and practicality it make's for a superb low-cost ownership proposition and a perfect entry into the fascinating world of classic car ownership.
