Seller's comments about 1962' Morris Minor Traveller
Hi all,
For sale- 1962 Morris Traveller, £5250 ONO. Located near Ipswich, Suffolk.
I am sadly parting with my Traveller after three years of ownership. I really don’t want to sell it, but I have far too many cars including a couple of long-term projects that I would really like to push on with.
It’s an early 1098- with clap hands wipers- first registered in December 1962. It is an Essex car originally and, as far as I know, stayed local to Clacton-on-Sea until I brought it over the border into Suffolk.
When I bought it, it was a rolling shell. I believe it was restored in the mid-1980s and at the time it was fitted with a Marina engine and Type 9 gearbox. All of this had been removed and I put it back to standard with a 1098 engine and gearbox. The engine has excellent compression- 150 PSI on all cylinders. It retains a couple of modifications which were done at the time- it has servo-assisted Marina disc brakes, a front anti-roll bar and rear telescopic shock absorbers.
Naturally, it has had lots of new parts including:
Full stainless steel exhaust, four Nankang tyres (fitted 2021 and basically as new), new water pump, new carb jet and needle, new battery, electronic distributor, alternator (I believe the loom was replaced when it was restored as there are no traces of a regulator box), new servo, new brake master cylinder, rebuilt front and rear brakes, new clutch, new clutch mechanism, poly tie bar bushes, new speedo and throttle cables, new rad hoses, a solid state fuel pump, new wiper arms and blades, new windscreen seal…plus lots more I have probably forgotten!
I have done a couple of thousand miles in it since, including regularly driving to work in the summer. In my ownership it has always been stashed away over winter and not taken out in the wet etc.
The body is very solid. It clearly had a decent amount of attention when it was restored to the usual places. It appears to have been resprayed- this has micro blistered in places and there are a few dents and scratches here and there, along with a couple of areas where the top coat has flaked. This is why it’s £5k not £15k!
The wood is original (the indicators are surface mounted, rather than set in to the wood). It’s not perfect- there are some darker/ softer patches, but there can’t be many 62-year-old Travellers with their original wood.
The interior was mostly missing so I have pieced it together. The navy door cards and carpet were already there, that was about it! A pair of red front seats and a light blue rear seat were sourced. I painted these with vinyl paint, although it has come off the front seats in places. The long-term plan was to buy some navy seat covers and replace the headlining (it’s tatty and there are some tears as pictures). The gloveboxes, parcel shelf, boot liner mat, and the aluminium strips in the boot were all new.
It’s not a show queen- it’s a good honest usable car. If you want to make a perfect one, being such a good shell this would make a good basis, or just carry on driving it and enjoying it!
