Seller's comments about 1923' Renault 8Hp Kj1

1923 RENAULT 8HP KJ1 - AN INTERWAR RARITY!A charming and historically significant example of early interwar motoring, this 1923 Renault 8HP Type KJ embodies the marque’s transition toward accessible, practical automobiles. Powered by its 1056cc four-cylinder engine—now fully restored—the car offers improved reliability and usability while retaining its authentic character and period charm. Presented in an attractive and characterful period style, the car displays the distinctive Renault configuration with its rear-mounted radiator and elegant, upright front aspect. Its compact proportions and lightweight construction make it both engaging to drive and highly representative of 1920s European design. The Type KJ occupies an important place in Renault’s heritage as one of its early mass-market successes, competing with contemporary offerings from Citroën and Peugeot during a pivotal era of automotive development. Today, surviving examples are increasingly scarce, making this a desirable acquisition for collectors of vintage French automobiles or early light cars. Benefiting from its engine restoration, this example presents an appealing opportunity for both touring and display, offering a rare combination of mechanical reassurance and historic integrity. A delightful and usable pre-war motor car, ideally suited to events, exhibitions, or inclusion in a discerning collection. This particular example has most interesting history... When the Renault was built in 1923 the age at which you were allowed to drive must have been much lower as it was given to a girl for her 16th birthday and she drove it for 4 years and covered 14, 000 miles! In 1927 it was given to the current vendors father- a Mr Ian G Lindsay, for his 21st birthday. He used it extensively for the next 25 years sometimes as his main transport, and sometimes as backup to another car. He got married in 1932 and a year later he and his wife drove all the way to the South of France and back (at a maximum speed of 40mph). It had to be laid up for the last 3 years of the war but in the late 1940s it was his main transport and in 1948 he drove it almost 10, 000 miles all over Scotland. It suffered a broken half shaft in 1952 so was stored in the garage until he died in 1966. It was then sold it to Michael Mutch , the curator of the Myreton Motor Museum in East Lothian. He overhauled it and it was used as background in various films, including 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie'.  After Mutch died his collection was sold off and the current vendor (son of the second owner) bought it at a Bonhams auction in 2001. Although it was running it obviously needed serious work to the engine so it was entrusted to Milford Vintage Engineering who completely rebuilt the engine from the bottom up. New crankshaft bearings and big end shells. Rebored and new pistons and valves etc. etc. Steering box rebuilt and 4 new Michelin tyres. Over £15, 000 was invested in it at this stage... Mileometer reads 72, 525 but not warranted. By 1930 the mileage was 39, 000 but then there is a long gap in my father’s notes and in 1935 he starts again and the mileage is 29, 000! It looks as though there has been a new speedo fitted and the total mileage should be about 111, 525 but a rather inconsequential detail for a vehicle of this age... The vendor reports that the insides of the engine are as new but the dynastart (starter motor/ dynamo) does not work. Not having had regular charging the battery is dead and needs replacing. It is only 6 volts. The original handbook is present together with a current V5and a photocopy of an original road test in French. Many spare parts are still obtainable from Depanoto in France. With just a handful of such examples left in the UK, this is a highly desirable interwar car major mechanical work has already been undertaken. Befitting of some minor recommissioning, this rare Renault KJ 8 hp is offered just £7000-£9000This vehicle is located near Oban, Argyll and Bute from where it will need to be collected.
