Very sadly having to sell my 1972 1302 S due to losing my garage.
Good, original Super Beetles are extremely rare, and the earlier 1302 is the one to seek out because it has the flat windscreen. At 51 years old, it’s also exempt from ULEZ, tax and MOT.
Being an S, this example has the 1600 twin-port motor, which I * think* is the most powerful ever fitted to a German Beetle, with a blistering 60bhp. It keeps up really nicely with modern traffic, and doesn’t take much getting used to.
It was put into dry storage by its previous owner in around 2000. I bought it as my first car in 2012 and racked up 15, 000 miles over the next few years. It was then kept in dry storage again from around 2016-2023, and as a result is in great, usable condition inside, outside and mechanically - with just 60k miles on the clock.
It’s just been recommissioned by Volkswagen UK, at a cost (to me) of more than £2300 - which included an extremely comprehensive service and loads of new parts.
Here are just some of the most important new parts fitted (there are 46 entries on the invoice!):
- 4x Michelin Classic tyres (proper - £560)
- Steering box
- Pushrods
- Lucas battery
- 1x front KYB shock + top mount
- HT leads
- Fuel pump
- Brake hoses
- Brake pipes
- Loads of new rubbers inc anti-roll bar bushings and steering joints
- Rocker covers
- Aluminium air hoses
- Vacuum hoses
It now runs and drives like an absolute dream - I’ve just taken it out for a big run in temperatures of 3deg C and it had no problems at all. It even heated up nicely in the cabin. I did a lap of the M25 a couple of weeks ago, too, and it sat very happily at 65mph all day.
It’s not 100% perfect: if I was keeping it I would save up for a respray (it looks great from a few feet away, but there’s some bubbling and a few battle scars). The bottoms of the doors need sorting as well.
The interior is great: few scuffs here and there, plus a little rip in the driver’s bolster. I have fitted a Sony radio with Bluetooth and wired up some speakers in removable wooden boxes behind the back seat, as I didn’t want to cut the parcel shelf.
I have the original radio, plus a box of bits containing the original front springs (the ones on the car are 2in lower and make it sit much nicer), a rare Beetle Bouncer gravel shield and assorted wires/ plugs/ gaskets etc.
I have a chunky history folder, too, including receipts for everything it’s had done in the last 12 years, plus some paperwork from its original owner in the 1970s.
The car is located in West London and I highly recommend viewing. I can take you for a drive, but will only allow test drives with proof of comprehensive insurance.
Any sensible questions, please just ask - I can't fit everything I know about it into an advert. I can also send more pictures if you'd like.
