Website: mercedesclasiccars .plThe first presentation of the new Mercedes model from the SL series, marked with the symbol W 113, took place on March 12, 1963 at the Chateau des Eaux Vives in Geneva. It was a show for journalists. It was then that journalists gave the new model the nickname "Pagoda", due to the concave hard roof, which somewhat resembled the roofs of Buddhist temples. The official premiere of the new Mercedes SL took place two days later during the 33rd Geneva Motor Show (March 14-24, 1963). The new car immediately aroused great interest - it was to replace such legendary predecessors as the sporty 300 SL and the boulevard, much weaker but beautiful 190 SL. Replacing a legend is never easy, this task was undertaken by the then Mercedes stylist Paul Bracq. The Pagoda's body line is simple, even geometric. A car with a hard roof looks like a small sedan, but its beauty will only be appreciated when it is equipped with a soft, fabric, folded roof. The vertical headlights were taken from the 300 SL, other technical solutions from the larger 220 SE (W 111). The car is safe, has controlled crumple zones, very good suspension, front and rear disc brakes. Mercedes SL W113 Pagoda (1963-71) with hard roof. The most important change compared to the 190 SL were the engines. The predecessor used a 1.9/115 HP petrol engine, which was sufficient for boulevard driving, but not suitable for fast driving. Therefore, reference was made to the 300 SL and 6-cylinder engines with injection were introduced under the hood of the Pagoda. In the first model presented, it was a 2.3-liter engine with a power of 150 HP. It allowed acceleration to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds, and the maximum speed was 200 km/h. The 230 SL model was produced in the years 1963-67, costing 22,200 DM (including a replaceable hard roof). To refer to the rally traditions and victories of the Mercedes 300 SL, in 1963 a Mercedes Pagoda 230 SL was entered into the heavy Spa-Sofia-Liege rally. On difficult mountain routes with a length of approx. 5,000 km. km, the Mercedes crew took first place, and Pagoda proved its sporting ambitions. Another engine under the Pagoda's hood is a 2.5-liter unit with a power of 150 HP. It was produced for a short time, just over a year (1966-67), 5,196 units were built. Performance - similar to the 230 SL model. Price: DM 22,800. The third engine is a 2.8-liter unit with 170 HP. The 280 SL model was created in 1968-71 (until the end of production of the W113 model). It is the most refined, often available with an automatic transmission, because the main recipients were customers in the USA. 23,885 pieces produced. Price: DM 24,300.
