Seller's comments about 1980' Mercedes-Benz W123
I will sell a Mercedes W123 after renovation. The car has undergone a number of works to make it look at least as good as it did 40 years ago when it left the factory. Moving on to the work done on the car, we have to start from the very beginning, when the Mercedes was brought to the workshop to verify the scope of the repair. After the first inspection, we knew that we would have to first strip the car of its decorative accessories. I would like to mention that the Mercedes looked good before the renovation decision was made (photos available for viewing), but as always, the devil is in the details.
We knew from the beginning that the thresholds were the weakest link and this would be the priority. So we started by dismantling the moldings and chrome exterior elements, then removing the seats and carpets from the cockpit and the trunk. We also noticed corroded recesses in the trunk, the scope of work gradually expanded, which prompted us to remove the front fenders, there was no surprise, we knew that we would find corrosion on the "A" pillar, especially since our Merc has a sunroof and the water drain is located right here under the fender. We no longer had any illusions, a short discussion and a decision - our Merc needed saving, so we started taking action. The steps we took were to gradually disassemble the car down to the smallest screw and remove the corrosion. We managed to eliminate the uninvited guest in the form of rust by cutting out and inserting the necessary elements, leaving as much healthy original German sheet metal as possible. At this stage we already knew what would happen to the car, it would be completely re-painted, including the engine compartment, trunk and interior. The sills and trunk recesses were completely new. The car was protected with a reactive epoxy primer, then the interior was additionally soundproofed with bituminous mats. When the car was handed over after the bodywork and painting work was completed, we could do nothing else but renovate the engine and the entire suspension. This is what happened, the suspension was disassembled and sandblasted, and then went straight to the powder coating shop.
Then it was assembled using the best available parts. All rear beam bushings have been replaced with new ones, including the rubbers on the stabilizer, and the connectors are also new. New SNR bearings, a new handbrake repair kit (here we used the original Mercedes, shoes, springs, spreaders and regulator)
New hand lines and anchor discs original MB. Now let's move forward, namely to the engine, which was also dismantled for sealing. The decision came quickly, the engine and suspension had to be made so well that it would be a pleasure to own such a classic for decades to come. Therefore, it must be durable and reliable, and it must also look and not differ from the rest. The engine was dismantled, all aluminum elements were subjected to water sandblasting (aquablast) - it looks like new, there are no pits like after regular sandblasting, just wipe it with a cloth and it is clean. The most important point was the replacement of the bearings because they turned out to be worn, but the shaft was very nice. The connecting rod bearings were ground and here we used Kolbenschmite bearings for the first grind, while the main ones were fitted with nominal ones and the shaft was only polished by the grinder. All engine screws have been galvanized, which is why it looks like it was taken off the shelf of a warehouse in Sindelfingen. Let's go back to the chassis once again, because a lot has happened here too, I didn't mention at the beginning that all the chassis screws, hubs and clamps were dismantled and also electro-galvanized to a golden color. In total, about 40 kilograms of iron from our barrel were sent for galvanization.
So, to sum up, Merc got new brakes, the calipers have new pistons and all rubber bands. We used new flexible hoses, ATE in the front and Bosch in the back. The front anchor discs are new and original, the front and rear brake discs are brand new.
All brake and fuel lines have been replaced. There are so many new parts in the car that I would dare to go to Spain and back.
Currently, the Mercedes is on aluminum rims, these are 15-inch Baroks from ATS, I also have two original sets of steel rims with hubcaps. Some of them have summer tires, while the other set has winter tires, if someone would like to use the car all year round. I invite everyone interested in Beczka, I will be happy to tell you about what I did not write or forgot about.
