Before the Second World War, MG had established itself as one of the defining names in the British sports-car market. The Midget, in particular, made sporting motoring accessible to a much wider audience, thanks to its compact dimensions, low weight, and entertaining driving characteristics. Produced from 1929 through to the TF in 1955, the Midget range helped establish MG as a major player in affordable sports cars. Over time, however, the company’s Abingdon range increasingly focused on larger, more powerful and better-equipped cars, leaving the TA positioned somewhat below the newer models. MG addressed this gap in 1938 with the introduction of the Tickford Drophead Coupe, a more sophisticated version of the TA designed to sit between the small two-seat roadster and the larger VA models.
The bodywork was produced by Salmons & Sons and brought several improvements aimed at making the car more practical and comfortable. Among its features were a telescopic steering column, a three-position insulated folding roof, full-height doors with winding windows, and an adjustable windscreen that could be opened to improve airflow. Under the bonnet was a 1, 292 cc overhead-valve four-cylinder engine, mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. The car also used sliding-trunnion suspension at both the front and rear, together with Lockheed hydraulic drum brakes on all four wheels.
Production was relatively limited, with just 260 Tickford Drophead Coupes completed before the outbreak of World War II. It is believed that approximately half of those cars have survived, making the model an uncommon example of pre-war MG production.
TA2574 is offered as part of a deceased estate and has been in the current ownership since the early 1960s. It was found by the late owner as a project in Buxton, which he rebuilt before using it as a daily driver and family car. He attended various rallies and hill climbs over a number of years, until the car was taken off the road again in the late 1970s. After taking early retirement, he resumed the restoration in 2006, working in the family garage and carrying out most of the work himself. A record in the 2024 TA Tickford Register indicates that components previously acquired from another TA Tickford, TA3082, which had been scrapped, were used in the restoration. We are told that a new hood was fitted a few years ago by a specialist in Hull, and this appears to remain in good condition. At the time of consignment, the engine turned over on the button but did not start. We do, however, have a video dated July 2026 showing the engine running. TA2574 should be viewed as an ongoing project, and prospective buyers should expect to carry out a programme of recommissioning before the car can be returned to the road. It is supplied with a comprehensive history file that includes an original owner’s manual, Octagon Car Club and TA Register correspondence, old buff and green logbooks, and a current V5C.
