1927 SPEED SIX SPECIAL
This is a very interesting Special with some quite fantastic history and provenance. This example of the six-cylinder, 4.2-litre Le Mans Speed Six is blessed with the advantage of hindsight projected onto original period design specifications, enabling the driver to experience what many would call an ultimate period driving experience.
The “SLOAN” is built on a 1920’s Mercedes Benz chassis. Documented in the extensive history file accompanying this car the Mercedes body and running gear was removed from the car in the mid 1950’s when the owner at the time wanted to create the ultimate special for hill climbing and racing in the United Kingdom and Europe. XK Jaguar running gear was dropped onto the chassis and a body was built by Alpe and Saunders of Kew Gardens, Richmond 1161. In the early years the car campaigned successfully at hill climbs in a very much stripped down form, with no guards, screen etc.
The car in that form was sold in the early 1960’s and shipped out to New Zealand where on arrival it was used to tour the North Island.
Very little is documented during these years of the cars history and it is believed that it was stored on a farm in a dark barn for many years where it apparently narrowly avoided being destroyed by a fire. The car was then sold in the late 1970’s where it was re commissioned and re registered for New Zealand roads on the 14th of August 1981.
Beneath the vintage exterior, reproduced to original specifications of the era a 4.2-litre 6-cylinder, super charged engine delivers plenty of power. The result is an amazingly steady car with high torque at low revs and a truly stunning exhaust note. The “WADE” supercharger has been disconnected by the current owner due to the immense power it created, thus making the special more manageable and pleasurable to drive.
The body style is reminiscent of the era and constructed using only the best period materials, aluminum covered in stretched wax fabric, steal guards, machined alloy firewall and dash. Leather trim adds to the starkness and patina of the interior along with period steering wheel and aero screens.
This car is accompanied by a fascinating 3 volume history file dating back to the late 1920’s when the Mercedes Benz chassis was acquired. An early Country Life magazine shows the property where the car originally lived. Original Auto Car adverts document the collection of parts in the 1950’s along with other special photographs of the car touring New Zealand not long after arriving in NZ in the early 1960’s.
